Questions, answered plainly.
Everything people ask before running affiliate programs on AffiliateTracking: how pricing works, what the fraud engine checks, how payouts run, what switching involves. Drawn from the questions SaaS founders actually ask in public.
The list
Pricing and plans
What does self-host cost?
$99 once. You get the software to run on your own server, a license key and 1 year of updates. After that year you keep everything you installed; updates are optional.
What does cloud cost?
Starter, Business and Scale, from $49 a month, cancel any time. Every plan includes all 12 fraud rules and the full ledger; higher plans add postbacks, usage-based commissions and volume.
Do you take a percentage of my referrals?
No. Cloud plans are a flat monthly price and self-host is a one-time $99. The commissions your affiliates earn stay yours; growth never changes what the tracker costs.
Is there a free trial?
14 days on cloud, no card needed to look around. If you're switching from another tracker, switch links start a 30-day trial instead.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. 14 days for self-host, no questions. Cloud is month to month, so you just cancel and owe nothing further.
Am I locked into a contract?
Cloud is month to month with no annual requirement. Self-host keeps running on your server even after the update year ends, so the decision to stay or move is always yours.
Do prices change when I upgrade?
You pay the difference prorated for the rest of the month. Downgrades apply at the next renewal so you keep what you paid for.
Fraud and abuse
What do the fraud rules check?
Twelve checks run on every conversion: self-referrals, mismatched devices, disposable email domains, chargeback history, impossible timing, duplicate cards and more. Each rule can hold a payout for review or pass it.
What does fraud protection actually cover?
Twelve automated rules on every plan, watching for the abusive signup, attribution and commission patterns merchants complain about most: coupon-site junk signups, code scraping, attribution hijacking. It is not an add-on tier; Starter gets the same protection as Scale.
Can coupon-site fraud be caught before payout?
Yes. Commissions are screened by the fraud rules and held for your review rather than auto-approved, so scraped-code orders can be caught before payment. Every decision is recorded in an append-only ledger, so the evidence trail stays.
What happens to commissions under fraud review?
A payout run leaves them out until you release the hold. If a hold lands after the batch, approval stops the money. An upheld hold reverses the commission with a clean ledger record rather than erasing history.
Can commissions be edited or deleted?
No. Money rows are append-only. Refunds and upheld fraud holds post reversing entries, so the ledger always balances and history is never rewritten.
Payouts and money
How do payouts work?
You run a payout batch when you choose. The run nets out refunds, checks tax forms, holds anything under fraud review, and produces a file you can pay from. Approval steps are optional per plan.
Are payouts locked behind the top plan?
No. Every cloud plan runs payouts the same way, with refund netting and tax-form checks. Nothing about paying affiliates requires an upgrade.
How are refunds handled in payouts?
Refunds are netted against exactly the commissions they should reduce, using the double-entry ledger. No affiliate is overpaid because a refund landed in the wrong place, and no failed payout vanishes without a trace.
Are tax forms checked?
Yes. Payout runs include automatic tax-form checks, so an affiliate missing paperwork is caught during the run, not by your manual spreadsheet review later.
Tracking and billing
Which billing tools does it work with?
Stripe, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Chargebee and Recurly out of the box. Self-host includes Lemon Squeezy natively; cloud connects the rest by webhook.
What if I switch payment processors?
Your affiliate roster and referral history stay. The tracker works across five processors, so losing or changing a billing provider does not wipe your program.
Do you track purchases or signups?
Purchases. Conversions are tied to real payment events through the billing integrations, not to fragile checkout scripts, so you reward revenue, not signups.
Are recurring commissions supported?
Yes. Renewals are credited automatically from subscription payment events, refunds on those renewals are netted in payouts, and every occurrence lands in the ledger.
Why do my numbers disagree with my ad platform?
The append-only double-entry ledger is the single source of truth; entries are never silently rewritten. When numbers look wrong you trace the full history instead of trusting a rebuilt report.
Switching and setup
Can I import partners from Rewardful, Tolt or FirstPromoter?
Yes. Export your partner list from your current tool and the import maps emails, referral codes and commission rates into a review queue you approve row by row.
Do my old affiliate links keep working?
With one redirect rule on your side, yes. Every import ships with the exact redirect advice for your old link format, so no partner loses credit mid-flight.
How long does setup take?
The tracking script is one line. Most programs track their first conversion the same day. Migrations from another tracker take an afternoon.
Data and compliance
Is it GDPR compliant?
Self-host keeps every record on your own server and we never see it. Cloud runs under our published data terms, with analytics cookies gated behind consent and a full GDPR notice.
Who owns my affiliate data?
You do. Self-host means your server, your database. Even on cloud, referral links and assets run on your domain, and there is no network holding your program hostage.
Is there a test mode?
The 14-day trial lets you run real tracking and payout flows against your actual processor before committing. Self-host buyers additionally get the 14-day refund window.
